What is a Sustainable Kitchen?

Sustainable kitchen products take care of the kitchen without compromising the Earth’s and other resources. From countertops to floors to kitchen utensils, our favorite sustainable kitchen is easy to navigate and you undoubtedly get more bang for your buck in the short and long run.

Here are some examples of a sustainable kitchen:

  1. Eco-friendly cookware such as crockpots
  2. Stainless steel appliances
  3. Reusable food storage containers like glass
  4. Composting
  5. Cloth kitchen towels instead of paper
  6. Reusable napkins
  7. Reusable straws
  8. Reusable coffee filters
  9. Reusable storage bags
  10. Sustainable storage bags for longer lasting food and vegetables

These are just a few examples of sustainable kitchen products. You get the idea! Besides avoiding chemical and toxins, waste, plastic and other unfriendly  products, sustainable kitchen products often save money because they last longer, reduce energy use and support local businesses and vendors.

Why a Sustainable Kitchen?

What are your sustainable kitchen products? If you don’t think you have them, time to give it a try. They’re so easy to find and affordable! Why are they so important to any kitchen? In many cases, they use less electricity, are often more efficient than non-sustainable products, are often antibacterial, you’re doing the Earth a great service, and you’re teaching your children that sustainability is not a foreign language!

Do you know that we spend more time in the kitchen than almost anywhere else in the house? People gather around the kitchen on holidays and spend time cooking, cleaning and organizing. The kitchen is one of the most important rooms in your house.

Most of us have had pots and pans, dishes, silverware, utensils and other kitchen items for years. We forget that it’s time to buy something more efficient and sustainable. As long as it’s time to buy new, why not join the sustainability train?

What are steps to take for a sustainable kitchen?

  1. Use Reusable Grocery Bags
  2. Buy Organic
  3. Reduce Food Waste
  4. Use Natural Cleaning Products
  5. Use the Whole Plant
  6. Use Reusable Dish Towels
  7. Energy efficient cooking
  8. Energy efficient appliances
  9. Eating green saves energy and waste
  10. Use sustainable cleaning products

Sustainable products tend to last longer than non-sustainable products. That’s less wasteful, right there! It’s so easy to forget that every little thing that we do in the kitchen has an impact on the environment and the Earth. If you’re afraid that it’s costly or not in your budget, think again. If a product lasts longer and is more efficient and sustainable, chances are you’re saving money in the long run.

Thinking of a Kitchen Remodel?

Remodeling your kitchen is the time to invest in sustainable kitchen products. Remodeling with sustainable or even reclaimed materials is the way to go.

  • Recycled glass tile backsplashes
  • Cabinets made of reclaimed wood
  • Sustainably sourced or reclaimed countertops
  • Sustainable flooring materials, like bamboo
  • Cork is kitchen-friendly and sustainable
  • Energy efficient appliances
  • Water filter for pure water

There are so many ways to create your favorite sustainable kitchen. It takes imagination, knowledge about what is sustainable and what isn’t, time and energy to shop for the simplest of sustainable products, the desire to be a “planet protector,” and support from your family to keep it real in the kitchen. Children are eager to learn if we teach them about sustainability. The people that are out in the trenches fighting for a sustainable future are practically children, themselves.
